RTA vs Pre-Assembled vs Custom Kitchen Cabinets in Canada

Posted by

·

Ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets arrive in parts for assembly. Pre-assembled cabinets arrive as built boxes ready for installation. Custom cabinets are made to a project-specific design and dimensions. None is automatically the best value: the right choice depends on the room, the details you need, your budget, and who will measure and install the cabinets.

Compare the three buying paths

  • RTA or flat-packed cabinets can suit a defined cabinet program when you are willing to arrange assembly or eligible local installation. Confirm available sizes, fillers, specifications and delivery.
  • Pre-assembled or ready-to-install cabinets reduce assembly work on site. Confirm product availability, freight, access for larger boxes and who actually performs installation.
  • Custom cabinets can help when an unusual layout or specific finish cannot sensibly be achieved with a cabinet program. Confirm drawings, materials, samples, production scope and installation.

This is a comparison of buying paths, not a promise that every supplier or every WRIZA series offers all three. Confirm availability for your specific project.

Where buyers get surprised

Assembly is not installation. An assembled cabinet still needs to be positioned, levelled, secured, aligned and finished on site. Ask who handles each step.

Standard sizes still need careful planning. Walls may not be straight, ceilings vary, and appliances need clearance. Fillers, panels and trim can make a standard cabinet program fit and look intentional. Plan those pieces before ordering.

A door sample does not describe the whole cabinet. Request actual box, door, drawer and hardware specifications for the selected line. WRIZA’s door material guide explains why door finish and cabinet-box construction should be evaluated separately.

The cheapest box price may not be the cheapest finished kitchen. Add needed panels, accessories, freight, assembly and installation before comparing options. A flat-pack order and an installed renovation proposal do not have the same scope.

A practical decision sequence

  • Record wall dimensions, ceiling height, windows, doors and appliance models. Arrange final field verification before ordering.
  • Identify which sizes or finishes truly need a custom solution.
  • Compare the cabinet list and specifications, not only room photographs.
  • Decide who receives, checks, assembles and installs the cabinets.
  • Get a preliminary quote, then approve the final scope and drawings before the order.

Where WRIZA fits

WRIZA helps Canadian buyers compare four cabinet-series directions, prepare a layout and request a preliminary quote. Remote design depends on customer-supplied measurements, photos and appliance information, which must be verified before ordering. For qualifying Southern Ontario projects, WRIZA can review on-site measurement and cabinet installation. See the local installation process.

Browse real Ontario cabinet projects to see design and installation choices in actual rooms. When ready, send your project details for a preliminary review.

Frequently asked questions

Does RTA mean low quality?

No conclusion about quality follows from the shipping format alone. Compare the selected line’s documented construction, hardware, finish and support, as well as installation quality.

Does pre-assembled mean installed?

No. Pre-assembled describes how the cabinet arrives. On-site installation is a separate service unless the written proposal includes it.

Is custom necessary for an older home?

Not always. A measured plan may use standard cabinets with carefully chosen fillers and panels. An unusually shaped room or highly specific detail may justify custom work.
